Canter
The canter is a three-beat gait that is faster and more dynamic than the trot but slower than the gallop. It is characterised by a sequence where one hind leg strikes the ground first (the "lead" leg), followed by the other hind leg and the diagonal front leg together, and finally the front leg on the side of the lead. This sequence creates a rolling motion that is comfortable for the rider. The canter has a distinct moment of suspension with all four legs off the ground, adding to its fluidity and grace. In dressage, the canter is developed into more controlled forms, such as the collected canter, working canter, and extended canter, which are used to showcase the horse's ability to balance and perform various movements with agility.
